Strasbourg Options

Viking river ships dock at several locations in Strasbourg, including one on
Rue de la Minoterie and another on the German side of the Rhine in
Kehl.

A bus shuttle is typically used to transport guests from the docks to the city center for the Christmas market

Viking docking locations

Rue de la Minoterie, Strasbourg: A dock for Viking and other cruise lines is located at 9 Rue de la Minoterie, which is near the Parc de la Citadelle and provides a docking option in Strasbourg.

Kehl, Germany: Many Viking ships, particularly larger vessels, often dock across the Rhine River in Kehl, Germany, during the Christmas market season. From here, a bus shuttle is arranged for transport into Strasbourg's city center.

Getting to the Christmas markets from the docks

  • Shuttle bus: Given the various possible docking locations, Viking typically provides a shuttle bus service to take guests directly to the Christmas market areas in the city center. This is especially common for ships that dock in Kehl.
  • Walkability: While some docks might be close enough to walk, a shuttle is often the most convenient option, as many ships do not dock directly in the heart of the city during the busy holiday season.

Travel time from Viking river ship docks in or near Strasbourg to the Christmas markets varies depending on where your ship is docked. For ships docked further away in Kehl, Germany, Viking will provide a shuttle service into the city center, which can take an hour or more due to holiday traffic and bus management. For closer docks, the bus ride is shorter.

From the Kehl, Germany dock (typical for Christmas markets)
  • Bus shuttle: Viking offers a shuttle service, which may take an hour or more, especially if you get caught in traffic heading into the city during the holiday season. The shuttle will drop you off closer to the markets than you could get by car.
  • Train: You can take a train from Kehl, which takes about 39 minutes to get to Strasbourg. However, you would need to get from the dock to the Kehl station and then from the Strasbourg station to the markets.
From the Strasbourg dock (e.g., Rue de la Minoterie)
  • Bus shuttle: The bus ride from a closer dock in Strasbourg, such as the one on Rue de la Minoterie, will be shorter than from Kehl. A drive from this area to the city center takes around 15 minutes, but the shuttle may take longer depending on traffic.
  • Walking: It is a long walk (potentially over an hour) from the docks near the Parc de la Citadelle to the city center and Christmas market areas like La Petite France, and the path can be unglamorous.
Factors affecting travel time
  • Docking location: The exact docking location can vary due to river traffic, water levels, or even what Viking ship you are on.
  • Traffic: Holiday traffic can significantly increase travel time, especially for shuttles or buses entering the city center.
  • Shuttle logistics: The bus may have to wait for all guests to board, adding to the overall travel time.
Viking often uses complimentary shuttle buses to transport customers between the river longship and Christmas market locations, especially when the ship is docked a significant distance from the town center or when the port is a bus ride away from the main attraction.

The frequency and schedule of these shuttles vary by port and itinerary:
  • Frequent Shuttles: In some cities, Viking provides free, frequent shuttles running throughout the day, allowing guests to return to the ship as they please to warm up or have lunch.
  • Scheduled Departures: In other locations, such as Strasbourg, there might be a few scheduled return times in the afternoon (e.g., 2:15 PM, 3:15 PM, 4:30 PM), and guests have to inform their guide if they plan to take a later bus back. The last shuttle might leave well before the ship departs for the evening.
  • Included Excursion Transport: The initial transfer to the market area is often part of the included morning excursion, typically via a coach bus.
  • Walking Access: In ports where the ship can dock centrally (like in Budapest or Passau, depending on the specific dock), the markets may be within easy walking distance.
  • Program Director Discretion: The specific logistics and timing can depend on the program director and local guides for the day, so it is recommended to check the schedule provided on board.

Viking aims to provide convenience, though guests seeking to experience the markets later in the evening might need to arrange a taxi back on their own if the last shuttle runs earlier in the afternoon. The best way to get the most accurate information for a specific sailing is to check the details on the My Viking Journey portal or ask a Viking representative directly

VISIT-OF-CELLAR-AND-TASTING-OF-5-WINES-1-CUVEE-Z-1-GRAND-CRU-KOUGELHOPF

What To Expect

Maison ZEYSSOLFF is one of the few wineries in Alsace still to vinify in century-old oak "foudres" of over 10,000L. Its greatest curiosity is the ZEYSSOLFF cask, made in 1897 for the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition.

Maison ZEYSSOLFF offers a complete guided tour of the winery, from cellar to bottle. A commented tasting of the estate's wines, accompanied by a slice of kougelhopf (Alsatian brioche), will thrill your taste buds... Following the organic conversion of our estate in 2020, we have renovated our cellar to offer our future visitors a new activity. We have a scenographic area in the cellar with a 180° immersive movie projected onto barrels - the only one of its kind in France. This movie is not a remake of anything we've seen to date about working in the vineyard...but a film about our rather rich history, and our working philosophy. The whole thing is projected in the winery, on hundred-year-old oak barrels at 180° (mapping on certain sequences) with sound work, allowing the audience to be totally immersed in our story.
